Best Black-Owned Beauty Brands

For all of February, I want to highlight all of the Black beauty space has to offer. There are so many Black-owned brands that I love because their products are honestly the most inclusive! Mainstream brands need to learn a thing or two from Black-owned brands in terms of offering diversity in branding & the products themselves. Here are some of my favorite Black-owned brands that I’m obsessed with:

Makeup Scientist

Jess N’neka founded Makeup Scientist in 2020 after extensive research on the makeup industry. This is the newest brand that I’ve found & tried, but it’s worth praising! In the first two years, Makeup Scientist was featured on Nerd Bot, Chemical & Engineering Magazine, & more. The products are all branded as aspects of a science kit including a ‘dry ice’ setting spray, ‘lab manual’ eyeshadow palette, & more. My new go-to product is their setting powder because it provides a smooth & seamless finish with no flashback. Additionally, their lashes are vegan yet have a mink look & feel that comes in a 5-pack. This is the brand to purchase if you want quality makeup made by a makeup scientist!

Beauty Bakerie

Cashmere Nicole created Beauty Bakerie in 2011 to make the beauty industry & beyond a sweeter place. Honestly, Beauty Bakerie has some of the cutest & sweetest packaging I’ve ever seen! All of Beauty Bakerie’s packaging & products are themed after sweet treats & baked goods. Their setting powder comes in a ‘flour’ bag, their lashes come as ‘cookies’ in a cookie jar & the list can go on! Taking the branding & packaging out of the equation, the quality of the products are top tier. My favorite products are their setting powder & beauty sponges that I find myself repurchasing time & time again. If you’re looking for a brand that will make you feel as cute & sweet as the packaging, then this is the brand for you.

Bolive Beauté

Melissa Bolive started as a freelance makeup artist before launching Bolive Beauté in 2020. She actually had Cashmere Nicole as a client! The brand started with custom glitters yet expanded into pigments, lip products, & more. The branding & packaging provide a luxurious feel, & the products themselves deliver the same result. The lip glosses are all in pinky nude shades that add the perfect touch for soft glam lip combos. The Nude Persuasion palette have buttery soft shades that layer seamlessly for any eye look. I recommend this palette for anyone starting in makeup or looking for a versatile palette to add to their kit as it suits deep to fair skin tones.

Juvia’s Place

Chichi Eburu established Juvia’s Place in 2016 to enhance rich & deep skin complexions. Chichi succeeded in her vision because Juvia’s Place is truly the ‘it girl’ of pigmented products in the makeup industry. The branding & packaging is inspired by rulers & queens of African kingdoms. I first found Juvia’s Place back in the day on YouTube with the height of makeup gurus. I saw countless tutorials & reviews praising the pigmentation of Juvia’s Place palettes, so I knew I had to try the brand. I was not disappointed either! Since Juvia’s Place started, they’ve launched numerous other products full of pigment. A few of my favorites are the blush & bronzer duo palettes & the Warrior II palette. This is the brand if you want bold & powerful looks!
